Review of Eraserhead (1977) by Mason B — 28 May 2013
Whether it's my own bitter tastes or not, I love this film. It is a revulsion-inducing masterpiece that studies a man's tolerance to disgust. At first it was a kind of gothic horror film, but by the end, the tone of the film is something intangible, yet it seems to hang right in front of you.
It is a cynical tale of desperation and alienation, the disparate dream of the repressed Jack, a man shining with fear, anger and sadness. It is unusual, bizarrely disturbing, but is in fact a valuable study of the grotesque.
The entire experience is a Bildungsroman, watching Jack come of age through his deliriously apocalyptic surroundings. Eraserhead is unique as it blended in but, at the same time, aspired for something great.
In closing, it is a wonderful, winding magnum opus, ambiguous in its subject matter and impenetrable in its execution. 5/5 stars.
