Review of Eraserhead (1977) by Xcv V — 20 Nov 2010
The strangest film to ever be released in the English Language.
I'm such a big fan Of Lynch's "Twin Peaks" and his visions of "The Elephant Man" & "Blue Velvet", and "Eraserhead" is one of those movies that you'll never forget after only seeing just 10 minutes of it.
From what has been said, there are 3 different ways you can interpret the story and I think the RT Consensus is the one I believe in.
Now allow me to help clear some of hard mysteries up.
Henry Spencer is living in a small apartment and a very harsh industrialised Philadelphia, this could relate to Mr. Lynch's own childhood in Philadelphia as he claims it was very difficlut and unforgiving.
Henry throughout the movie keeps coughing up this foot-long worm which resembles that of a sperm which could ultimately explain why his & Mary's Baby is so Deformed.
The "Man in the Planet" could be God, but I never really looked into that...
The Lady in the Radiator sings a song called "In Heaven" that says heaven is all smooth sailing which could possible be Henry thinking of taking the "Easy Way Out" (Suicide).
Ultimately in the Final act, Henry could be having a Heart attack after stabbing the Baby and the White Light surrounding Henry along with the Open arms of The Lady in the Radiator could mean he has passed on.
That's that mystery cleared up but WOW man, all those themes are displayed without virtually any dialogue what so ever.
David Lynch really pulled something out of the norm with this one and it by far exceeds any other english speaking surrealist film i've ever seen.
Final Verdict: There's not much that comes to mind when trying to review this film just like not much comes to mind when watching it. you just sit there and either be entertained or totally disturbed.
I've been trying to buy the film ever since seeing it so obviously I really have to recommend it but do proceed with caution (I Really Mean That).
