Review of Eraserhead (1977) by Timothy G — 30 Jul 2010
I know it's fashionable and cool to heap praise on Lynch's lush, albeit silly exercise in cinematic self-indulgence. It doesn't change the fact that this film ultimately, in Shakespeare's immortal words, is "full of sound and fury - signifying nothing".
Lynch's use of convoluted and hyperbolic symbolism to suggest the male fear of commitment and family is akin to using a bulldozer to dig up a daisy. While the production values are top notch, especially considering the extremely limited budget, these are not enough to redeem a film whose message is smothered by its own self-possessed weirdness.
