Review of Eraserhead (1977) by Drew P — 12 Aug 2010
A truly great movie, Eraserhead is light years ahead of its time in every aspect. One day this type of film will be in the mainstream, but unfortunatley, Eraserhead never reached the success it should have.
In every category of artistic endeavors, there are always going to be the originators. The originators typically never reach the mainstream in the same way that their followers do. For example in music, The Velvet Undergound, who were very obscure in the late 60's, are now reaching the mainstream 40 years later.
The film Eraserhead is an originator of a style of cinema that will become very popular one day.
Its not about the story, the plot, the characters, thats all unimportant in this new style of film. Whats important is the overall feel of the movie, the sets, the distance of the characters, and the mystery of the storyline.
A lot of critics are beginning to understand this now, but this is over 30 years later from the orignal release of Eraserhead.
Critics originally thought Eraserhead was just a retro horror film. Finally people are realizing that this is not the case at all. Eraserhead is a unique, excellent work of art that will not only stand the test of time, it will define a new style of cinema in the years to come.
