Review of Eraserhead (1977) by Brian S — 20 Jun 2011
I have absolutely no idea what I watched here. with Lynch's later work, there at least exists some idea of story and character, even if everything is mired in confusion and obscurity. with this film, however, I don't even begin to have a clue.
the hair, the alien baby, the girl in the furnace, the snake thingys, the dude at the controls, the planet, the characters' completely random behavior...hell, even the title and the dream sequence that produced it .
I don't see a point to any of it. like the surrealist classic Un Chien Andalou, I ask this film "what are you showing me and why should I care?" and like that 16 minutes of complete weirdness, this full-length experimental feature doesn't really give me an answer.
a cult classic for some, maybe, but not for me.
