Review of Eraserhead (1977) by Sean P — 18 Jan 2013
Add this to the list of really stupid Lynch films that make no sense. People will try to tell you what it means, but even after they do, you go back and look and it still seems like it has nothing to do with what you've been told.
When you have to start assembling the puzzle pieces yourself, you begin doing the artist's job. When you begin doing the artist's job, the artist fails. It's plain and simple. There are ways to make a movie profound and creepy without making it indecipherable.
It's just frustrating to see this guy get praised for his movies time and time again, only to watch them myself and realize that the whole thing us a giant, directorial mistake. I don't believe for a second that 82% of people who saw this film liked it because I don't believe that 82% understood it.
Even after watching it three times, it hardly makes more sense than the first time I watched it. You want a profound movie that progresses cinema? The I would stay away from Lynch and go watch Malik. Malik is where cinema is headed, and Lynch is nothing more than an annoying, meaningless, often sexual distraction.
