A young, blond-haired farm boy learns he is to lead a rebellion against an evil empire, all the while being tutored to harness a mystical power by an aging warrior. No - it's not Star Wars - it's Eragon, a good-hearted by highly-derivative fantasy flick where a dragon essentially takes the place of The Force.

Decent special effects and some effective sequences aside (including those with the evil sorcerer) Eragon ultimately feels like an anachronism of sci-fi gone by, with simply far too many other similar flicks doing it better on many levels.

Highly underwhelming with John Malkovich somehow garnering a cheque for his performance as the black-hearted king, despite all his scenes filmed on one set (and no doubt, in a few days). Don't look for the sequel, despite it being set up for further installments.
