Review of Eragon (2006) by David L — 05 Apr 2014
This had quite an all star line up so assumed it must be of fair quality, but given it's pitted within a similar concept to Lord of the Rings, it's always going to fall short. This was far less entertaining and felt a bit too nicey nicey for my liking, lacking a lot of blood and gore that it needed to make it more believable.
The fact that a feared mythical beast like a dragon was given the most effeminate voiceover possible made the good guys too pretty to be the heroes we root for. As for the villains, Robert Carlyle played a decent part, but he worked for John Malkovich who was rarely seen throughout.
If he's being saved for the sequel then that is a bit of a waste given I don't think this will warrant one. I imagine children of a young age that aren't permitted to see such films like Lord of the Rings would find this fascinating, but they'll soon forget about it once they've grown up.
It just seemed to lose its way, starting out as a young boy that was chosen to ride the dragon in the hope he would overthrow the dark lords reign of power, then concluded with an ending that totally omitted the tyrant himself.
Did the producers forget about the concept? It left several questions unanswered and felt a bit soppy and disjointed throughout. I've seen a lot worse in terms of movies on the whole but usually films of this genre tend to be a lot better - not one I'll be desperate to repeat.
