Review of Equity (2016) by Michael T — 09 Sep 2016
Not a thriller at all. The kind of slow, borderline boring film that critics rate high. Can't account for audience rating except that it is another morality tale that tries to make the daring observation that people like making money.
The horror! The entire plot doesn't make financial sense, but the acting is good, or seemed that way because they had plenty of screen time doing very little. No doubt people start rumors to affect stock prices, but this is the dumbest way to do it ever.
Movie doesn't really seem to know what a hedge fund really does other than use insider information. However, it does portray government as spying on people to enforce laws that are so vague as to be meaningless.
And, in the end, doing it to favor their own careers after government. On this level, if does work ass a morality tale about abuse of government, but I doubt filmmakers noticed.
