Review of Equilibrium (2002) by Danna M — 31 Mar 2013
This has to be one of the best of the genre - dystopian world where feelings are illegal and Big Brother is a sham. Christian Bale is convincing in his role as enforcer John Preston whose feelings begin to seep in when he stops taking the mandated Prozium.
Angus Macfayden is equally convincing as the big boss and ultimate hypocrit, Dupont. Taye Diggs looms everywhere monitoring John Preston for cracks in his flat-affect compliance with the law and ending in an unexpected (by him) bloody mess.
Emily Watson is sympathetic and beautiful, especially when she goes up in flames. Sean Bean makes a blessed appearance as enforcer gone rouge. And Sean Pertwee checks in as Father to remind us he is the king of British sci-fi.
Yes, Equilibrium lack true originality, but it makes up for it with a well-told story and some kick-ass kung fu. Bottom line - I LOVE this movie!!!
