Review of Equals (2015) by Désirée S — 25 Oct 2016
Review:
This must have been one of those movies that slipped under the radar, because I certainly hadn't heard of it before it was released on DVD, and even then, there still wasn't much said about it. Personally, I found the movie quite slow, and it does take some time for something to happen but the concept is quite good and the intensity did pick up towards the end. The movie is set in the near future, we're emotions are cast as a disease, so basically everyone walks around like a bunch of Zombies. Nobody really talks to each other, and they live in fear because the authorities keep a close eye on there movements. In such intense circumstances, Nia (Kristen Stewart) and Silas (Nicholas Hoult) fall in love with each other, and regularly meet up at night to be alone together. With the help of a few radical insiders, they plan to leave the compound so they can live free as a couple but there weird behaviour is noticed by the authorities. After a few dramatic incidents towards the end, there love is pushed to the limit, and there planned escape ends up costing people's life's. The concept was well thought through by the director but I ended up falling asleep after a while. As there isn't much dialogue throughout the movie, it really needed some more elements to keep the audience interested but you can't fault it for originality. The futuristic colony was put together well and all of the actors put in a decent performance but the structure of the project wasn't that great. Average!
Round-Up:
I've always thought that Kristen Stewart is an over rated actor, who seems to act the same in all of her movies, which is why my expectations for this film wasn't that high. She was a good choice for her role, because she does play these type of characters pretty well but this film needed 2 charismatic actors to make it intersecting. Anyway, the movie was directed and written by Drake Doremus, 33, who also brought you Moonpie, Spooner, Douchebag, Like Crazy with Felicity Jones, the late Anton Yelchin and Jennifer Lawrence and Breathe In, which also starred Felicity Jones and Guy Pearce. His movies haven't really blown up at the box office but at such a young age, he has achieved quite a bit. I didn't like the way that he ended this movie and I personally would have taken full advantage of Guy Pearce but with that aside, it's a decent watch for all you dramatic, romance lovers out there.
Budget: N/A.
Worldwide Gross: $2million.
I recommend this movie to people who are into their romance/sci-fi/dramas, starring Nicholas Hoult, Kristen Stewart, Scott Lawrence, Guy Pearce, Vernetta Lopez, Kate Lyn Sheil, Rebecca Hazlewood and David Selby. 4/10.
