Review of Epic (2013) by Gloria P — 18 Nov 2013
There are a a lot of lacklustre 3D movies coming out recently, right? They are all up there technically nowadays, with really cool VFX, great mo-cap and all that jazz, it's just the stories. They are a little dry, run-of-the mill, childish and well boring. The heyday of Pixar seems a long time ago when we were watching Monsters Inc, Ratatouille and Wall-E.
Pixar has still been impressive with its lineup, maybe not with as much amazingness as before, but it's still got it. How about Epic though, where would it lie? Blue Sky in general tend to target funny story lines with slightly below top of the line graphics, in simple settings.
This was not the case in EPIC. It was a highly detailed world with lots of characters and a simple storyline. To first address the graphics, they were honestly not to my liking. They seemed to lack the detail required to pull this off and seemed "cheap". I wasn't transported into this world as seamlessly as I would have hoped.
Now as for the voice acting, is there a start NOT in this lineup. Beyonce, Colin Farrell, Amanda Seyfried and Chirstoph Waltz, Steven Tyler and drum rolllllll.... Pitbull (ewww). For the most part I was distracted by them more than impressed. They're such household voices, that it was hard to associate them with the voice acting. It seemed disjunct and unattached from the film.
Finally the story is weak. It's super cheesy and seems to be targeting young pre-teens exclusively. Unlike the Pixar films there is NOT something for everyone. If you are outside of this gender / age bracket it is unlikely that you will enjoy Epic. It's watchable it's just not good.
I also found the main character weak and lacking of any likability as well. She seems like a stuck up brat at the start of the film, and although naturally she sees the wrong in her ways towards the end, but still I end up not liking her. I don't know why, thats just the way it went!
