Review of Epic (2013) by Matt W — 08 Jan 2014
Harmless, charming but completely forgettable.
There is a lot of imagination here, but not a lot of originality. The story is very typical of the genre but I enjoyed the look and design of the film. This came across as the better version of Ferngully- although U=I didn't like Ferngully much at all.
The voice acting is mostly effective although I found that Colin Farrell's voice weirdly didn't click in the character very well- the design of the character felt like a lower voice should have been given to him. I don't know. It was weird.
It may sound like I'm nitpicking but as a whole the film doesn't really do much wrong, it's just a bit of fluff with a simple story that doesn't exactly wow you, but doesn't offend or annoy. It's just a nice little film.
I found the ending a little unsatisfying but Christoph Waltz and Josh Hutcherson give some great voice acting and there are some great ideas and visuals.
