Review of Entourage (2015) by Tracy S — 06 Jun 2015
Just a few years after the show wrapped up on HBO we get to see what our favorite crew from Queens is up to with the film Entourage, a fantastic film for fans of the show but everyone else will probably feel left out.
I must be honest, I am a fan of Entourage prior to seeing this movie and as a fan of the show I had a blast watching this movie, however this is both the strength and weakness of this film. Lets start with the good in the movie.
The best part of the film is hands down how well this blends together the energy and charisma the show had and really picks up like no time has gone by. With some TV to film adaptations there is sometimes a disconnect but here the pace and comedy is just as rich as it was in the show and this literally feels like another season of the show.
This time we see Vincent Chase take on directing his first movie but when he goes over budget he makes enemies with the wrong producer and in typical Entourage fashion, shenanigans ensue. Luckily, everybody involved with the show is back with Adrian Grenier, Jeremy Piven, Kevin Dillon, Kevin Connolly, and Jerry Ferrara all back as the entourage.
Grenier is still perfect as Vince, Piven steals the show again as super agent Ari Gold, Dillon is still hilarious as Johnny Drama, Connolly is still great as E, and Ferrara is still just as lovable as Turtle.
On top of the key cast we also see several returning characters and numerous celebrity cameos both new and from the original show that add some truly hilarious moments. The creator of the show Doug Ellin wrote and directed this and he really did a solid job here.
The movie looks amazing, the comedy is frequently hilarious and he even tells a good story that takes some of these characters a lot further than he did on the show. However this is also the strange thing about this movie; where Ellin succeeds in his writing he also fails because he had an immense amount of potential to do so much more but he just settles for a few stories and then the credits roll.
Some of the funniest set ups in the film don't get finished and you are left wondering what else happened. One major flaw here is that there is a really lackluster way of connecting the show into the movie that really won't win over any new viewers.
I wont ruin it for you here, you may enjoy the way Ellin decided to go about this but for me they could have done it a number of better ways. Overall I will say that Entourage is definitely worth seeing.
The cast is phenomenal, the jokes are great, and the cameos will give you something else to look for. However I feel like you should see the show first because there are so many connections that you simply won't understand unless you are a fan.
As a fan of the show I loved this movie because it is basically a whole season in one sitting that makes you remember why you love the show so much, however I have to say that if you have never seen the show this may be best as a rental.
