Review of Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room (2005) by Jim C — 06 Jun 2007
An excellent documentary about the rise and fall of Enron. Most of us are at least passingly familiar with the story of the energy giant's collapse, but few of us know what really happened. At least I didn't.
This film explains it all in a clear and engrossing way. And yet, the filmmakers aren't totally biased or judgemental about the people of Enron. Sure, they bankrupted thousands of people... but one gets the idea from this film that Enron was more of a company gone out of control rather than some evil scheme solely to hurt people (as I'm sure the company would have looked had Michael Moore made the film). In my opinion, it was more pride than greed that ended Enron (although to there was greed involved, to be sure).
If you've read the book of the same name, you apparently won't learn anything new from this film (although most reviewers say that it does encapsulate the book nicely). If you didn't know much about the Enron saga, you should really see this movie. It'll make you mad... really mad!
