Review of Enough Said (2013) by Gina Y — 05 Mar 2014
Enough Said is one the most charming movies I have seen in a long time. Everything about this movie feels authentic and it currently sits among one of my favorites of the year. The strongest aspect of this movie is the acting followed closely by the writing.
I just finished watching Veep not too long ago, so Julia Louis-Dreyfus was one of the main reasons I went to see this movie and she did not disappoint. Her character is very relatable and as opposite as you can get from Selina Meyer.
She invokes that awkward humor without it seeming like a shtick. Also she has amazing chemistry with James Gandolfini. Their relationship feels so genuine that it is impossible not to root for them throughout the course of the film.
Speaking of Gandolfini he is absolutely remarkable in this movie. He is so kind and warm that it is almost hard to believe this is the guy who played Tony Soprano. It is a tragedy that his life was cut short before we could see more earnest work like this from him.
As I said earlier the two have remarkable chemistry which is reflected in the sincere dialogue and writing. The plot for this movie is relatively simple, but that is one of the reasons it seems so genuine.
It doesn't have those clichés that are often present in modern romantic movies. It's just two people getting to know one another and it works extremely well. The dialogue between Gandolfini and Dreyfus is so honest.
It captures the awkwardness of starting a new relationship with someone in such a subtle way. Also it is really funny, but not so funny that it takes away from the plot in any way. I realize I've been focusing on the romantic angles of the movie, but there are other working parts that contribute to the perfect package that is this movie.
However I didn't know about them before going in which I think made the experience more enjoyable, so I won't mention them here. Honestly I don't have that much more to say about this movie because it tells the story it wants to perfectly.
Everything melds together in an exquisite way that could make even the most cynical person believe that there is good in this world. I know because I am one of those cynics and I had a big, stupid smile on my face through most of this movie.
