Review of Enough Said (2013) by Mike S — 27 Oct 2014

A well-acted look at mid-life second romances. Eva (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and Albert (James Gandolfini) meet at a cocktail party. Both are divorced and have daughters about to leave home for university. They begin dating. Their dialogue is sarcastic and cynical, but still honest, funny, and, most importantly, believable. Eva hears some unkind things about Albert from an unexpected source, and starts to have second thoughts. In this part of the film, it was hard to like Eva because she was being a real dolt. But we don't know as much about her past as we do about Albert's, so maybe she has an excuse. The performances are real enough that we're really not sure how it's going to turn out.

There's an extra poignancy in Gandolfini's character, because comments are made about his weight and health. The actor died shortly of a heart attack not long after making this film.

This is an open, honest tale of second chances and accepting that getting older doesn't mean we should settle for what we can get.
