Review of Enemy of the State (1998) by Adarsh B — 13 Apr 2009
You ever get the inexplicable feeling that someone is watching you? Well, multiply that thirty times and add some crazy technology and you have Enemy of the State. You have this lawyer, Robert Dean (Will Smith) who, by no fault of his own, comes into possession of a recording of a crime involving political figure Thomas Reynolds (Jon Voight).
Reynolds and his associates find out that he has it, and then it becomes a constant chase, hunting Dean with every available resource. It is directed by Tony Scott, and this being the sixth feature of his that I've seen, I must say that he really knows how to choose scripts that work to his strengths.
He directs never-boring, always-engrossing action-dramas and is quickly becoming one of my favorite pulp directors. This is probably my favorite Will Smith movie, and while he does get goofy in parts, he never really plays it so you see a shadow of the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
The third act isn't as strong as the first two, but the finale makes up for it. This is a great movie for conspiracy theorists.
