Review of Enemy Mine (1985) by Steven N — 09 Jul 2009
If you're anything like me and your one dream in life has been to see Louis Gosserr Jr. as a a pregnant alien, then the Wolfgang Peterson directed 1985 film "Enemy Mine" is right up your alley! the film takes place in a future where humans are at war with a race called the Dracs.
During a fire fight, both a human and a Drac find themselves stranded on a nearby planet, where they are forced to face their hatred for one another, and find a way to work together in order to survive.
The plot is eerily reminiscent of any number of Star Trek episodes (most of which were done better). The effects are dated, hokey, and more ofthen than not extremely laughable. the script is an absolute mess - filled with some interesting ideas, but layered in heavy fog of melodramatic goofiness that simply can't be ignored.
To top it off, Denis Quaids "tough guy with a heart of gold" performance is over the top, even for a movie in which he's working alongside a guy in a full-length alien suit. Yet, with all the negatives about "Enemy Mine" - I somehow couldn't help but be entertained.
The film manages to be so very, very bad - so very, very good. No matter what I can guarantee that "Enemy Mine" won't leave you bored. It's goofy, it's stupid, it's often hilariously bad, yet it's incredibly watchable - even if it's for the wrong reasons.
