Review of Enemy Mine (1985) by Sean W — 24 Aug 2010
Dennis Quad is trapped on a planet with a member of an opposing alien species. They start off at each otherâ??s throats, but grow to become friends out of necessity. Yes, itâ??s all a story weâ??re familiar with.
Enemy Mine lays on the 80s cheese and thatâ??s really part of its charm. This was before the time of CGI and while everything doesnâ??t really look photo-realistic, you buy into it because itâ??s actually there.
I do miss those days. The movieâ??s effective and interesting, telling its story of forgiveness and friendship. Maybe not subtle, but it works. Then it takes an odd left turn in the final act, trying to up its action quota.
The end feels like something ripped out of another movie completely. Me thinks thereâ??s some story left on the cutting room floor. This is a movie I grew up with, so I canâ??t help but enjoy it. I have a feeling others not in the know will be much quicker to forget it.
