The story is compelling on its own terms and the look and feel are exactly right, so it's unclear why the filmmakers felt the need to tart things up with Hollywoodisms like a love triangle, a little kid in danger, swelling musical cues, and a gratuitous shot of Rachel Weisz's naked buttcheeks.
