Review of Enemy at the Gates (2001) by Michelle W — 08 Mar 2009
Set in Stalingrad, about the famous battle there and the alleged duel between two snipers from either side.
Classic American war movie. The ruins of a city, Hitler, fight scenes, love, its a formula for entertainment. The sniper battle is intriguing, the acting is great, there is some incredible dialogue, it may well have stuck to a formula, but it is a very well made film.
I did think the love angle was just there for the sake of it, slows the plot too much.
We hear about war, who's supposed to live, how people cope, rise and fall of heroes, strategy. Its great to watch, but its still a great film.
Joseph Fiennes definitely did the best, playing an ambitious soldier and a tortured soul without forgetting he is supporting, a job he did well. Jude Law was Jude Law really.
The earlier fight scenes were very Saving Private Ryan. But the sniping scenes had great timing, and very suspenseful.
Just a cliched, but amazingly well-made film.
