Review of Enduring Love (2004) by Niek S — 30 Apr 2010
McEwan's novels tend to be overtly intellectual and contemplative, while containing some thriller elements. This holds for Enduring Love, too.
Michell skillfully translates the thriller element to the screen, but turning contemplative prose into a fascinating film is clearly harder: it results in dinner scenes with plenty of wine, wit and frowning, and snapshots of metaphysical lectures. Due to good acting is and apt directing, these scenes even kind of work, but they also show how hard it is to translate ideas into cinema.
