Review of Endless Love (2014) by Joseph T — 07 May 2014
Instantaneously forgettable teenage "love" poppycock about a developing relationship between the very privileged, nearly friendless and sheltered Jade Butterfield (Gabriella Wilde - Carrie [2013]) and the charming working class boy David Elliot (Alex Pettyfer - Magic Mike) that begins shortly after the pair of them graduate high school .
.. with Jade seemingly unaware that David was a classmate because her entire high school career had been focused upon academics in order to enter a highly competitive summer dental internship after graduation to follow in her father's footsteps (Bruce Greenwood - Thirteen Days).
David is attracted to the beautiful and affluent Jade whom he has seen from afar for years; but she finds herself completely enamored with the young man (within minutes it seems) merely because he spoke to her and took her on a rebellious joyride in somebody else's high dollar car at the country club she was attending while he was working.
As the kids come from "different worlds" and Jade is supposed to start her internship in a few days' time, her parents try to keep them apart which only makes the kids act all the more reckless.
David's family believes in his decision-making while Jade's defiance only has the support of her brother (Rhys Wakefield - Sanctum) who has never measured up to their father's expectations after their older brother died of cancer.
I believe the film is supposed to feel realistic and emotional but the undeveloped characters -- all of them -- lack believability and the pacing/timing of the events within the movie make it all more preposterous than affecting.
This movie is based on both the 1979 novel and 1981 film starring Brooke Shields of the same name. With a runtime of 1 hour and 45 minutes, I didn't buy a second of the "Endless Love".
