Review of Endless Love (1981) by Markus B — 12 Sep 2017
Start with the most cliche-filled Lifetime movie about two lovers who can?t be together because their families disapprove of their relationship, then cast terrible actors pretty much throughout, and crank up the melodrama to 11.
That is a perfect formula to give you Endless Love. I had a crush on Brooke Shields as much as any other guy in the 80s, but it wasn?t for her acting talent if she has any. She is straight-up awful in this movie, and Martin Hewitt might be worse.
He feels like the place where emotions go to die. Then there is Shirley Knight playing the insane mother who thinks she can live vicariously through her daughter or even take her daughter?s place. Aside from the fact that teenagers are horny (and if allowed to, they?ll have sex every chance they get) no one behaves in a realistic fashion throughout this entire movie.
I kept rolling my eyes every time someone did another moronic thing, which was basically every five minutes. None of the characters are likable, in particular Martin Hewitt who plays a sociopath that genuinely should have stayed in a mental hospital.
I also had an inordinate amount of hatred for the character played by James Spader because he shifts personalities at some point and literally behaves the total opposite of the character established earlier.
Endless Love is a repulsive film with very little worth watching in it. I would advise everyone to avoid it at all costs.
