Review of Ender's Game (2013) by Dean A — 19 Sep 2014
It's a lot like Full Metal Jacket. It's a film of two halves. I found the first half really engaging. Some might call it a bit dry, but I thought the tempo and the narrative played out well. Like FMJ, the first half is all about being a recruit and watching the path begin and open.
Like FMJ also, the first half holds all the engagement, only this is worse. The second half of the movie is a total borefest. There are some good mechanics in there, but ultimately it fails to connect with the audience and the momentum just stops.
Shame as this could have been a really good movie. The actors are excellent. They're just let down by a clever idea that just isn't executed very well, and certainly doesn't end very well.
Shame...
