Review of Ender's Game (2013) by Eyal D — 10 Oct 2014
Look at its Throwback Thursdays poster and you'll immediately recognize ENDER'S GAME as the film adaptation of a 'military science fiction' novel made to cash in on today's market of youths flocking to the theatres to get in their dosage of nostalgic fantasy flight and fancy, the films their parents played for them on their VCR.
Ironically the book, written in 1985, was dark and extremely serious in tone and not intended for a youth market whatsoever. Alas this film version, knows how to target its audience, and is aimed squarely at them.
At its heart ENDER's GAME is a taut actioner with all the familiar elements that add for a successful if routine sci-fi. The problem, like most films these days, the film does not sustain its high-octane energy that jets from its very start.
ENDER'S GAME ends in disappointment as its major showdown actually slows down the proceeding and brings the film to its anticlimactic conclusion. More so, by the end it looks and feels no different than any 'major motion picture' with STAR in its title.
