Review of End of Watch (2012) by Kathryn L — 14 Sep 2013
I originally had no intention of watching End of Watch, the trailers never sold it to me and the concept of "found footage" never appeals to me. That being said, End of Watch is the best police film I've seen since Training Day, which comes to no surprise that Training Day's writer is also End of Watch's writer/director.
The chemistry between the two leads is what really sells this picture, without that it would be dead. Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena should have been considered for an Oscar nomination last year and the found footage never really got in the way since the whole movie is handheld.
Only two things annoyed me in this film: the high rate of dangerous situations these two self proclaimed ghetto cops get into, and that in certain crazy dangerous situations, the two cops and/or the gangsters chasing them are still holding a camcorder.
Slightly idiotic. That aside, End of Watch is an emotionally charged, dark and powerful cop thriller with plenty of action. Wish I had seen this earlier.
