Review of End of Watch (2012) by Jesse G — 02 Feb 2014
Great film with taut, funny dialogue, and gripping tension. The performances by Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena as two LAPD cop partners are outstanding. They have a chemistry that is entirely remarkable, and essential for the authenticity of the story.
Imagine riding around all day, 4 days a week, with someone who shares with you hours of boredom and seconds of sheer terror. It builds a unique bond that is similar to soldiers in combat. The gritty story by writer/director David Ayers involves the two officers who come upon the machinations of a Mexican Drug Cartel.
The Direction by Ayers is special, using dashboard cameras to enhance the feeling of camaraderie of the police partners. David Harbor does a very good job as the older cynical officer. Anna Kendrick does well with limited screen time as the love interests of Jake Gyllenhaal's character.
This movie will leaving you with an appreciation of the good work that the LAPD does in difficult, trying, life threatening circumstances.
