Review of End of the Century: The Story of the Ramones (2003) by Oscar R — 28 Nov 2007
Who loves the Ramones????
Seems today the most popular t-shirt around is the classic Ramones t-shirt. With the classic lineup. Never mind.
It's common knowledge that the Ramones "invented" punk in the form it eventually took. What is less known is the personalities behind the band.
It's unlikely there has ever been a band with four complete opposites. Joey, very liberal, pop influenced. Johnny, very conservative, aggressive, business-like. Tommy, pragmatic, practical and intelligent. Dee Dee, flamboyant, creative, fragile, charismatic. A chemical thing as Joey was quoted at the beginning.
The documentary follows the chronological story of the Ramones from the beginning to the Hall of Fame induction. Plenty of interviews, including the last video interview with Joe Strummer. The interviews tell the story without any narrative. Plenty of music and great music it is. Interesting comment about their first album sounding like a Greatest Hits album. All in all, the stories behind the band are riveting as is the music. Anyone interested in guitar music will love this.
