Review of End of the Century: The Story of the Ramones (2003) by Rita K — 19 Jun 2008
Let me start by saying I've seen about every "punk rock" documentary ever made, and it's difficult to pay attention anymore. There aren't too many twists you can put on the era that is now (finally/debatabley) reaping the rewards of success. However, "End of the Century" took me by surprise. I've always been a fan, but not to the Trivial Persuit level and this film taught me a lot about The Ramones. The reason no other doc can touch this is because the personalities of the (extended) Ramones family are so quirky and coo-coo, I could listen to these guys tell stories forever. The dichotomy between these dudes is mind blowing! What an experiment.
Indeed, it is a dark story, but it still leaves me with a tickle in my tummy. This band changed not only my life, but the path of music as we know it. I had dreams about Joey, (whom I had the pleasure of meeting once), the night after watching it... and it has refreshed my love for them.
