Review of End of Days (1999) by Michael P — 19 Sep 2009
Some half-decent films have been made with Christian eschatology as their subject matter, and particularly the Satan-made-flesh theme (Rosemary's Baby and The Omen are obvious standouts) but this action-heavy, guns-a-blazin', high-explosive Schwarzenegger vehicle is too seriously inconsistent and internally flawed to redeem itself in even the slightest.
It's mindless where it would benefit most from a little reflection (concerning the "rules" of demonic possession, the causal interaction between supernatural substances and the material world, and the apparent ability to intercede the power of an omnipotent God to prevent the fulfillment of His prophecy, for starters), and trades any emotional significance that might be invested in the characters, instead, for an entirely botched message of religious faith. As a result, Gabriel Byrne, in the role of the devil, is the most likable here, and there is no reason to root for either the "good" guys, in religious vestments, or the bad guys--also in religious vestments. This one was made purely for those who love to glaze over an extended fireworks show.
