Review of End of Days (1999) by Chloe A — 22 Dec 2008
In 1979, a sign in the sky foretells the birth of the mother of Satan's child. After she (Robin Tunney, whose not really a good actress, but looks good naked) is born, 20 years pass as she grows up under the watchful eyes of Satan's minions (including Udo Kier whose always fun to watch).
Now, Satan is on Earth in human form (Gabriel Byrne, who really adds spice to the role, especially with his Irish accent peeking out here and there in his cool New York dialect) and ready to fuck the shit out of his new bride, but there's only one thing that stands in his way: Arnold fucking Schwarzenegger.
I gotta give Arnie some credit because he tried his hardest to do something new and show a new side to his fans. He plays a tortured ex-cop who now works top-dollar security who gets drawn into Satan's plans after a botched assassination one day.
Arnold's character is a widow to a dead wife and child and he drinks his misery away every day while contemplating (and coming very close) to suicide. I really liked Arnold trying to stretch his acting abilities, and by the end, he was back to his old gun toting, no-nonsense self again, which was nice as well.
It was also nice to see him in a genre he never really tampered with before, which is clearly horror a lot of the time, but the film includes enough action and suspense to elevate above the sometimes hurtful Horror label.
Yeah, this film is a lot of fun and I really enjoyed it.
