Review of Encounters at the End of the World (2007) by Michael H — 14 Nov 2008
Excellent film. Herzog is moving into his own world -- his intention is NEVER to make an subjective beautiful nature documentary, be become heavily involved through the answers he seeks and the story HE wants to tell.
I studied herzog in grad school and have seen many of his films -- not sure if its his best ( I love 'white diamond'), but definitely the most light-hearted and whimsical contrasted by moments of pessimism.
The film had many amazing stories of all the nomads that have converged at the south pole. The lost penguin is the quiet protagonist and metaphorically represents both then lost soles and nomadic characters --as well as the destine fate of the human race moving in the wrong direction.
Not to mention the wonderful cinematography and amazing scene with the seal sounds. Herzogs metaphysical approach to film making and his awareness of landscapes and ability to capture surreal surroundings is always a joy to watch.
