Review of Encounters at the End of the World (2007) by Erno K — 15 Dec 2008
Herzog has made many interesting documentaries. This is not one of his better ones.
Herzog's documentaries are always visually stunning. However, this time the music irritated me to no end. It was way too pretentious. Herzog also seems to mumble on about some quasi-philosophical things in every one of his films, and I'm starting to get enough of that. Some of the things he says doesn't even make any sense. He also has a weird tendency to wait too long after an interview to capture people's reactions, which is incredibly awkward and I hate it.
On the other hand, we see a dude that actually makes glaciers exciting. There is also some underwater diving, volcanoes and... penguins. Why is it always penguins! Although, I must admit, the crazy penguin bit was fucking sad.
The South Pole clearly attracts special people, and for the good of mankind I think it's better that most of them stay there. There are some loco hippies out there.
