Review of Enchanted April (1991) by Jonathan I — 16 Jul 2013
Great characters. Beautiful landscape and costumes. But overwhelmingly dry and anticlimactic. (I saw an impeccable stage version of this story previously, written and directed by women. In my opinion, this version fails in its writing and direction by men of a women's story.
) Rather than showing us the internal, emotional journey that happens when these women come together, we only witness an illogical outward change that supposedly magically occurs because of the characters' location.
It left me feeling like the film's creators did not really understand what arced their characters or how it happened.
