Review of Empire Records (1995) by Mike Q — 19 Sep 2008
I liked this when I was in high school, but watching it now, the characters seem a lot phonier. It's like watching a parade of archetypes, (here's the slut, now here's the artist and over here's the over-achieveing preppy).
I guess it was easier to buy it back then, since that's how we pictured other people, hermetically sealed within their easily defined category, (yes, I'm stealing a little from Breakfast Club), but it comes off a lot hollower these days.
The actors do a good job of selling it though, which is why I'm rating it this highly.
