There is no reason in the world for this movie to work...the story is unrealistic, the conflict is unconviincing...but it does work, largely because of the performances of it's then unknown-soon-to-be-famous cast.
Renee Zelwegger, Liv Tyler, Anthony LaPaglia and Debbie Mazar shine, and the guy from Dynasty who plays the pop star...doesn't.
