The first part in Steven Spielberg's WWII trilogy (including 'Schindler's List' and 'Saving Private Ryan'), 'Empire of the Sun' rides on an all-star cast and a talented exhibition from a young Christian Bale.
It's excessive length may bog you down at times, and its ending is far from exclamatory, but its protagonist's development is what makes the movie.
