Review of Empire of the Sun (1987) by Lanis L — 26 Jul 2009
Young Christian Bale gives an intense and stunning performance as the precocious boy who loses his innocence due to his brush with war. The boy learns about â??the things people do for a potato!â??, or rather the things people do to live.
As a smart boy, he quickly learns how to survive by being a errand runner/barter trade runner in camp. However, he was made use of and eventually betrayed by Basie. The blank expression worn on his weary and scarred face shrouded in dark eye circles tell so much of what he went through, when he gets to reunite with his parents, towards the end of the story.
