Review of Empire of the Sun (1987) by Robert K — 26 Nov 2009
What is singularly so redeeming about this movie is Christian Bale's performance. Despite his age he shows depth and understanding about the character he is playing. I would rate this as Steven Spielberg's best movie.
However much people may talk about his other movies, this is by far his best. I don't enjoy Spielberg movies but this has been an exception. What the movie achieves in doing is highlight the one segment of humanity most affected by war- Children.
Spielberg while portraying that through Jamie never loses sight of the other aspects of the ravages of war. The most moving part in the movie is the last few minutes where Jamie, terribly scarred by the war, finally gets reunited with his parents at an orphanage in Shanghai yet fails to recognize them and has a dazed look on his face.
A must see for all war movie lovers and even the not so huge fans of the genre.
