Thoroughly underrated Steven Spielberg WWII epic, Christian Bale delivers a phenomenal performance as a boy who matures as the war goes on. J. G. Ballard's semi-autobiographical novel is well adapted, and features superb cinematography, art direction, special effects and a rousing John Williams music score.
