Review of Empire of the Sun (1987) by Jonathan A — 27 Jul 2010
Christian Bale makes his debut as a young Brit who's displaced in a European/American internment camp (yes, they existed. Do your homework) after the Japanese invade China during WWII. Stunning, if not a little slow during the middle.
Yet, every bit of the story works to vividly portray war through the eyes of a child, mostly thanks to Spielberg. Bale's great performance is a prelude to the amazing roles he's done as an adult.
Highly underrated, anyone who enjoys war/survival stories must check this one out.
