Review of Empire of the Sun (1987) by Neal J — 06 Oct 2010
One of my favorite movies that almost no one has seen. It's a bizarre, sweeping, thought-provoking epic that is both emotionally elating and devastating. I always cry at least twice when I watch it.
Empire also showcases my favorite performances by Christian Bale and John Malkovich, one of my favorite scores by John Williams, and one of my favorite screenplays (written by one of my favorite playwrites--Tom Stoppard).
As long as you're not expecting a typical movie experience, I think you'll love it.
