Empire of the Sun is quite easily one of Spielberg's best creations. With Christian Bale carrying the film on his shoulders with what should have been an Oscar-won performance, this film carries the depth of war to a new level.
Instead of categorizing nationalities into the "bad" and the "good", Spielberg has made every soldier seen for what they are, men who are proud patriots. The unusual direction Spielberg went for has made this film a beautifully done war-piece and unfortunately, underrated as well. It is a pity the masses don't see and acknowledge great cinema like this.
