Review of Empire of the Sun (1987) by Kasey C — 05 Jun 2013
Mr. Spielberg did the impossible. He made the children's film, and the adult film, seamlessly merge. What strikes one, is the impressive person who is the chauffeur of the ambassador, and then the similarity between what the ambassador views in the Japanese soldiers he encounters, and how he expresses it to his son. Both the Chinese chauffeur, and the Japanese soldiers, are 'biding their time', and their patience is what is striking. It seemed, that the Chinese chauffeur was being Confucian, in modern society, and worriedly, he was impatient by his endeavour.
The next great impression, is when the young American boy, sees a young Chinese boy say angrily, no father, no mother, .... , and the Chinese boy is speaking about himself. It appeared, that I felt both the chauffeur, and the small boy were Japanese, and not Chinese.
