Review of Empire of the Sun (1987) by Eric H — 08 Jun 2013
One of Spielberg's best films. And definitely Christian Bale at this best. I've really come to love the detail in the filmmaking craft on showcase here. It's not the normal Spielberg flare, but it's a more subtle character-driven style indicative of Spielberg's earlier work.
Paired with Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's List, Spielberg has made the definitive "trilogy" of WWII centered movies. And then when you count the WWII settings in Raiders of the Lost Ark and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, he's spent a lot of time in this period.
And of course he's produced the incredible dual HBO miniseries "Band of Brothers" and "The Pacific".
