Review of Empire of the Sun (1987) by Bill R — 11 Aug 2013
Here's the thing. I loathe Stephen Spielberg. I'm sure he just wanted to make another kid-friendly movie about a kid (of course) undergoing some bathetic, heartwarming experience. The problem was the material he chose to adapt.
J.G. (Jim Graham) Ballard is one of the 2 or 3 best and most important writers of the 20th Century and his vision is consistent and implacable. The material simply overwhelmed the director and took on a life of its own.
Additionally, it didn't help that he hired an actor as Jim who was (and is) uh, decidedly off base.
