Review of Empire of the Sun (1987) by Kelly T — 11 Oct 2013
When it comes to child performances in film, Christian Bale as Jim has to be in the Top 5 of all-time. Not too bad for his first film, and it is no surprise that he has continued his great acting through his adult years. This is early dramatic Spielberg in a time when he was still widely known for his popcorn blockbusters. Many elements used in this film can be seen in his later films like Amistad and Schindler's List. I would put this film in the list of his more underrated films. This is a solid WWII drama about how war can change a person, even a child.
