Review of Empire of the Sun (1987) by Delinda D — 26 May 2014
While certainly a difficult film to watch, "Empire of the Sun" powerfully portrays World War II in the Pacific through the eyes of a precocious and (initially) bratty British child (brilliantly played by Christian Bale).
Raises fascinating and provocative questions about war, childhood, human greed and friendship. Beautifully shot, it may suffer from being a tad slowly paced, but Spielberg's genius for the potential of cinema shines through all the same.
Fantastic use of music as well.
